The Prairie Garden 2024 Virtual Launch

A brief introduction of the book by editor Evelyn Lundeen will start the afternoon. Our guest editor for this year’s edition, Barbara Shields, is a retired tax lawyer who has been collecting and cultivating roses for more than 30 years. Barb will speak to her passion for roses.

Following Barb’s comments, author Norm Sylvestre, a carpenter by trade originally from Saskatchewan but who decided to settle in Manitoba will speak. After battling our area’s heavy clay soils, he did some investigating as to how to improve his garden and chanced upon an old German horticultural technique called hugelkultur which will be the basis of his presentation today.

To close out the speakers, we will hear from contributor Marilyn Dudek, one of the founding members of the Manitoba Master Gardener Association who gardens in both Winnipeg and the cottage in Kenora. Marilyn will share a fascinating tale about an agave cactus in her living room that suddenly decided to bloom. A brief question and answer period will follow the presentations.
