The theme of this edition of The Prairie Garden is propagation. Propagation refers to the process whereby the number of plants of a particular species or cultivar is increased.

There are two principal types of propagation: sexual and asexual. In nature, propagation most often involves sexual reproduction - the production of viable seeds. Some seeds may require scarification or stratification to germinate successfully. Primary methods of asexual propagation include cuttings, layering, division, production of bulblets, and budding/grafting. Another example of asexual propagation is the production of plantlets such as seen on Chlorophytum comosum (spider plant). One can also obtain new plants via plant exchanges with another gardener who has a plant that you would like to have in your garden and vice versa.

In addition to determining what type of propagation is going to provide one with more plants, one needs to consider the tools and supplies needed. These could include the use of a cold frame, greenhouse or plant lights. If planting outdoors, knowledge of first and last frost dates is critical. Prepare yourself for the next gardening season by reading all about propagation methods that will help ensure that you will have a s successful season.
