PRODUCT INFO
“Are you going to Scarborough Fair
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.”
You can play the famous arrangement by Simon and Garfunkel of this old folk tune as you delve into this edition of The Prairie Garden featuring herbs and spices. The gardening landscape has changed drastically with the advent of the Internet. In addition to expanding ideas about how people garden, the scope of what people are growing in their gardens has also changed. That’s where this edition comes in by hoping it will entice gardeners into trying to grow herbs and spices that once seemed unlikely to become candidates for growing in prairie gardens.
You can read about basil, cilantro, hyssop, rosemary, hops, and tea tree. Learn about plants that are poisonous including belladonna, henbane, datura, & monkshood. One of the poisonous plants includes the beautiful blooms of foxglove which contain digitalis, a medication that has been used for centuries to treat heart disease. There’s an article on how you can turn herbs like myrtle, rosemary and lemon verbena into a bonsai. More practical information can be found on how to grow a better herb garden and recipes featuring herbs.
Our general section includes discussions on Itoh peonies, black knot fungus and a new species of fruit flies affecting berry crops on the Prairies.
Look forward to reading a well seasoned edition of The Prairie Garden!
