For this issue, we have a large collection of articles on lilies as well as an interesting selection of articles on general gardening topics: topics from roses to vegetable gardening; perennials to houseplants; tree care to native shrubs; and bumble bees to butterflies.

For our theme, a broad range of topics are covered, including propagation, pests, diseases, how to grow lilies, upcoming lily events, lily societies, etc., to assist the aspiring or already dedicated lily gardener. This bulb is a must in any prairie garden. If you haven’t tried lilies yet, read on and find out how to grow them in your own garden.

The genus Lilium is one of over 250 genera in the family Liliaceae. This family of almost 4,000 species of perennial herbs is characterized by plants having bulbs, rhizomes or tubers. To aid in classification, lilies are commonly split into nine different divisions. These divisions are usually listed as follows:

    1. Asiatic hybrids

    2. Martagon hybrids

    3. candidum hybrids

    4. North American hybrids

    5. longiflorum hybrids

    6. Trumpet and Aurelian hybrids

    7. Oriental hybrids

    8. Interdivisional hybrids

    9. Species lilies

This book can be looked upon as a companion to the 1990 Prairie Garden, which also featured lilies as its theme and was published the same year that the last national conference and show on lilies was held in Manitoba. Everything you want or need to know about lilies should be inside one of these two books.
